SPRINGFIELD, IL – Following the Commission on Government Forecasting and Accountability (COGFA) hearing on May 1, 2012 regarding the closure of several state facilities, including the Dwight Correctional Center and Illinois Youth Center in Joliet, State Sen. Sue Rezin (R-Morris) issued the following statement:
“I was pleased the Commission recognized the merit of keeping many crucial state facilities open, including the Dwight Correctional Center and Illinois Youth Center in Joliet. After attending many of the hearings and rallies, it became clear that the proximity of Dwight Correctional Center to the Chicago area is an important component of many of the rehabilitation programs for the inmates. Additionally, both of these facilities are major area employers, and their closure would impact local communities in an extremely negative way. While this vote was just a first step of what could be a long process, I commend those who have fought hard to keep these facilities open, especially Dwight Mayor Wilke and Village of Dwight Administrator Kevin McNamara. They visited Springfield many times, contacting legislators and explaining why these facilities are imperative to the public safety and economy of our region. It is my hope that lawmakers will find funding for the facilities and that they will continue to serve the people of our area for many years to come.”
