Rezin encourages women to get yearly screenings as Breast Cancer Awareness Month gets underway

State Sen. Sue Rezin (R-Morris) is encouraging women to get yearly breast cancer screenings as Breast Cancer Awareness Month gets underway.

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which strives to educate the general public on the disease, increase awareness in society, and provide greater access to services.

Sen. Rezin said that while October is officially dedicated as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, women need to be proactive year round with regular checkups and by educating themselves about the latest developments in the fight against breast cancer.

“Breast cancer affects 1 in 8 women in America,” Sen. Rezin said.  “It is extremely unfortunate, but this disease has touched everyone in one way or another, whether you’ve had the disease or know someone who has.  For me personally, I have a couple of good friends, Julietta and Debbie that were diagnosed and are now in remission, thankfully.   Yearly mammograms for women save lives.  I encourage women to be hands-on with their health and talk with their doctor to see if screenings are appropriate for their age and medical conditions.”

For more than 25 years NBCAM has been on the frontlines of raising awareness about breast cancer. While great progress has been made in the early detection and treatment of breast cancer, much work remains to be done.
