Nine year old Evan Simms of South Wilmington said he wants to encourage more people to become living organ donors when he testified in front of the Senate Revenue Committee last month on legislation (Senate Bill 68) sponsored by State Senator Sue Rezin (R-Morris). That bill passed the full Senate on Thursday, April 11.
Senate Bill 68 would allow businesses to receive a tax credit for offering their employees 30 days of paid leave if they decide to be a living organ donor.
Evan, who is a kidney recipient, was extremely brave to share his story said Sen. Rezin. She also noted that he has been a large contributor to the bill’s success.
“I am in such awe of Evan,” said Sen. Rezin. “Not only was he courageous enough to testify in front of several lawmakers, but he also demonstrates strength as he has had to battle serious health issues his entire life. No one should have to go through what Evan has gone through, especially at such a young age, but I am so glad that he is using his experience to try and help others.”
SB 68 now heads to the House of Representatives for consideration.
