State Senator Sue Rezin (R-Morris) and State Representative Jeff Keicher (R-Sycamore) joined Deputy Christina Musil’s family, fellow law enforcement officers, and members of the DeKalb County community Wednesday to formally dedicate a portion of Illinois Route 23 as the “Deputy Sheriff Christina Musil Memorial Highway.”
Deputy Musil, who served with the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office for five years, was killed in the line of duty on March 29, 2024. Prior to her career in law enforcement, Musil served four years in the U.S. Army National Guard as a military police officer, including a deployment to Afghanistan from 2008 to 2009.
“Christina dedicated her life to serving others, first by answering the call to serve her country and then by protecting the people of DeKalb County,” said Senator Rezin. “While no sign or ceremony can ever measure what her loss means to her family and those who knew and loved her, this dedication ensures that her name, her service, and her sacrifice will remain a permanent part of the community she served.”
Senator Rezin filed Senate Joint Resolution 35, which designates Illinois Route 23 from Perry Road to McGirr Road as the Deputy Sheriff Christina Musil Memorial Highway. Representative Keicher served as the chief House sponsor of the resolution, which received unanimous approval in both chambers of the General Assembly.
“The tragedy that struck the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office on March 28, 2024, will never be forgotten,” said Representative Keicher. “The law enforcement officers who go on protecting our communities in the absence of one of their own, Deputy Christina Musil, will forever have a hollowness where her kindness, friendship and love of country and community once sat. We need to take this opportunity to honor, praise and mourn the work we ask our first responders to do. When the unthinkable happens as it did here, we owe it to her memory to be more resolved in our pursuit of the good work she, all those willing to protect and serve, did, and do every day.”
The dedication ceremony was held at Afton Forest Preserve and included remarks from Rezin, Keicher, and DeKalb County Sheriff Andy Sullivan, as well as the presentation of the memorial highway sign. The DeKalb American Legion Post #66 presented the colors, and the Clinton Rosette Middle School Choir performed the National Anthem.
